And then there were three

Monday, June 22, 2015
I talk mostly about home life here, but I thought it was worth just mentioning a little of the super exciting changes that are happening around work too. For the last 7 years I have been the one and only genetic counselor at the Institute. And I am so happy for that to no longer be a true statement. 2015 will see the addition of two new genetic counselors joining the HudsonAlpha team. Whitley started about a month ago and Meagan is coming on board later this fall. 2015 is also seeing a major expansion institute wide with the recruitment of multiple new scientists and a medical geneticist, and the standing up of a medical genomics clinic where patients will actually be seen on campus. One of many reasons we need more GC support.

The news officially broke last week about the expansion of the genetic counseling team. It was cool to see it shared on the web and facebook (so it really is official). lol.

The empty space in the picture below is in the process of being converted from building shell to high-tech genomics clinic. I cannot wait to see the plans and designs we have been working on become reality and take an "after picture"with the clinical team in the same place...what will eventually be the patient waiting room. Stay tuned. It's going to be amazing.

GC Beach Reunion 2015

Friday, June 19, 2015
The news this week has been all abuzz about sharks attacking people off the coast of North Carolina. Like 6 foot sharks trolling the 2-3 foot deep waters right off the coast. Good thing we were totally blissfully ignorant two weeks ago when me and my grad school girls were splashing in those same waves. Yikes.

For several summers now the UNCG genetic counseling class of 2010 has rendezvous in Ocean Isle Beach, NC for a reunion weekend. It is amazing that still five years after graduation we can get our crazy schedules aligned so that all eight of us can get together. Leave it to a bunch of very type A girls and an online doodle poll.

I left after work on Thursday and drove to Atlanta where I met up with Kristen, and Alexis who had flown in, for the night. Then on Friday we drove up to South Carolina to pick up Whitney and then on to Ocean Isle, NC. Before we left Atlanta though we stopped by Revolution doughnuts for some road trip sustenance. It happened to be national doughnut day and the doughnut shops birthday which meant free little funfetti doughnuts with candles stuck in them.

We rented a house for all of us to stay in. We all had our own beds and a covered front porch with ceiling fans and 8 chairs. It was awesome and just a block from the beach.

Once we all got to town and decided living quarters for the weekend (by drawing names of course in the name of fairness), we headed down for a evening walk on the beach. It was so nice to be back together as a group.

Days were spent on the beach. Mostly under umbrellas but sneaking out occasionally for some sun and to splash in the (unknowingly shark infested) ocean.

Eight person beach selfie skills, still going strong!

Kristen, Alexis and I went for a run one morning, two miles down the road on pavement, and then walked the two miles back on the beach.

We got cleaned up each day and went out to dinner. This night we went to a restaurant with the worst food and service I have experienced in a while. It ended with a group written, very truthful yelp review over breakfast on the porch the next morning. The view was pretty amazing though. Good since we were there for about 3.5 hours. lol.

Other festivities of the weekend included celebrating Alexis' upcoming wedding with a bachelorette party, playing silly games, and walking downtown for ice cream.

The weekend ended way to soon and it was Monday morning and time to make the long trip home, via South Carolina and Georgia. Many of the girls will be back together this fall for Alexis' wedding. We are super sad that we already had a trip planned that weekend and are going to have to miss it. Counting down the weeks until the next reunion trip together...maybe Ocean Isle...or maybe the mountains far away from sharks.

Weekend Downtown

Tuesday, June 16, 2015
We pretty much lived downtown this weekend. Between strolling the Greene Street Farmers Market Thursday night, playing before the movie in the park Friday night and a concert in the park Saturday night, we had a great time in our hometown. Huntsville has done a lot to revitalize downtown and it shows.

It is that point in the summer when the middle of the day is just sweltering but after the sun goes down it is down right pleasant in the shade.

P and I shared a dinner of popcorn and (decaf) tea Friday night. Not the most nutritious mommy moment but that's ok.

We didn't actually stay for the movie because it started at P's bedtime and it started to sprinkle rain a little. Perry had a great time playing on our picnic mat and the activities the YMCA had set up (cornhole, bubbles, hoola hoops, hopskotch, etc).

Saturday we went back down town and dined on food trucks (tacos, nachos and a hot dog coming right up) for supper. We sat by the water and listened to the concert in the park while we ate and watched the ducks and fish swim by. Once we finished eating we walked up to the square and did the putt putt course that has been stood up by local business for the next couple weeks.

The different themed putting greens were super creative and fun. If you haven't been yet, you should totally stop by for a courthouse square scroll and putt. We brought Perrys little putter and balls but they definitely had some out for people to borrow and use.

I love the RocketCityMom website so much. I often will pop on there to see the calendar and see what is happening around the city that day, week and month. Like Friday when I saw the movie in the park on the calendar while I was going to pick up P and thought "sure, why not."

It was a fun weekend feeling hip in our city. Thanks Huntsville!

Teaching Grandma to take a selfie

Sunday, June 14, 2015
A week or two ago now my aunt and cousins from Texas were in town to visit. We stopped by to visit for a night. It's always fun to visit and catch up with them. And see the latest speech and debate the twins are working on.

The other highlight of the night? Teaching grandma to take a selfie. Here is evidence A: Grandma's first selfie.

Perry got some hands on selfie lessons too

Manda and Meleah had just been a part of a world record setting selfie chain at a speech competition the week before. Hence all the selfie talk. The chain broke when an adult couldn't take a selfie within a minute time frame. We were laughing that anyone could take a selfie in a minute. And then in trying to teach Grandma we changed our tune a little. It was a challenge. lol. But she did it!

Sunday Funday

Saturday, June 13, 2015
I am a couple weeks late in getting around to post these pictures. Things have been just a little bit busy around here. And I was gone all last weekend at the beach with my GC girls (more on that later). Sundays are fun days after church most of the time. We chill and nap and play and most Sundays we end the day at the pool with pizza and friends.

A couple Sundays ago now the weather was just spectacular and P and I had absolutely nothing going on after church. So on the way back into the neighborhood we stopped at the pond at the front and went for a little walk.

We walked along the pond and sat on the dock for a little while. And made silly faces. :)

Love that sweet boy and his sweet smile. And would you believe that all those photos were taken with my trusty iPhone? The cameras on those things just keep getting better. It's so nice to not have to carry around the big DSLR most of the time.

The pool water is finally warm enough to swim. I'm sure it is super warm by now. Sweet baby Hadley got to have her first swim experience. Perry was jealous of her little water raft. He kept saying he wanted a turn in Hadley's "boat." But he was happily entertained being carted around in the water and then used as a human beach ball.

Check out that air. P loved it. He kept saying "let's try it again."

Tutus and Baseball

Thursday, June 11, 2015
We love getting to watch our awesome niece and nephew grow up and participate in their various activities. We try to take full advantage of it now before Perry starts having activities of his own.

Last week we got to see Kate in her end of the year dance recital and Ben in his end of the season baseball tournament. They both did awesome!

Kate danced to every little girl's favorite: "Let It Go!" Fortunately she was in one of the first few acts so we were not there all night. After she danced we met up with her in the lobby to give her some pink flowers Perry picked out earlier that day.

Ben's team won the first game of the post season tournament. They did awesome and worked together really well. You could tell they got really tired towards the end of the next game. It was super hot and finally feeling like summer in the south.

Perry's ball park attention span is not huge. And either is Kate's. They had a good time playing with polly pockets together in the stand.

P was looking super cool in his summer shades. And sunscreen. Lots of sunscreen.
